Das Erste HD is the HD version of the main TV channel of Germany's public broadcaster ARD. Experimental transmissions began on 27 November 1950, regular broadcasting started on 25 December 1952, and the Das Erste brand has been used officially since 1996.
The channel works as a national public-service platform: its schedule includes Tagesschau news, information programmes, cultural formats, documentaries, films, series, sport and special editions.
ARD brings together nine regional broadcasters, so Das Erste gathers the regional structure of German public broadcasting into one federal channel. Das Erste HD broadcasts around the clock in 1080i and keeps a public-service profile built around information and culture.
