Arte is a European Franco-German public cultural television channel. It broadcasts in French and German and builds its schedule around culture, documentaries, auteur cinema, art, history, science and European public debate.
Arte emerged as a joint French-German project and has been on air since 1992. Its line-up differs from a standard entertainment channel: documentary premieres, themed evenings, concerts, stage productions, festival films, art programmes and major cultural cycles are central to its identity.
The profile of Arte rests on close attention to authorship, subject and context. Documentary investigations, European debates, concert recordings, festival cinema, historical cycles and arts programming sit side by side, treating culture as part of contemporary public life.
