France 5 is a French public television channel from the France Télévisions group, focused on knowledge, culture, education and documentary programming. It broadcasts in French and occupies a calmer, explanatory place within public-service television.
The France 5 schedule is built around documentary cycles, popular-science formats, programmes about health, society, nature, history, books, parenting and everyday culture. The channel is not driven by loud prime-time entertainment: its strength is clear explanation, long-form conversation and documentary storytelling.
France 5 grew out of the channel La Cinquième and has carried its current name within France Télévisions since 2002. Its schedule moves between documentary premieres, magazine editions, daytime educational blocks, repeats and evening programmes.
